This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! From Mountain City, US 421 runs north through Cherokee National Forest, through Shady Valley, and on to Holston Valley — 489 curves, 3 mountains, and 1 valley packed into 33 miles. The climb over each mountain ridge brings twisting roads and views, ending near South Holston Lake. A short side trip on TN 133 leads to Backbone Rock, a tunnel blasted through a rock fin that a creek flows through.
