Tail of the Dragon (US 129)

This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! The Tennessee section of US 129, known as the Tail of the Dragon, runs 11 miles from Deals Gap on the North Carolina state line and is famous for 318 curves. Some of the sharpest curves have names: Copperhead Corner, Hog Pen Bend, Wheelie Hell, Gravity Cavity, and Brake or Bust Bend. Because part of the road forms the boundary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there are no houses, driveways, businesses, or intersecting roads along the entire stretch. The speed limit is 30 mph. Tennessee State Troopers patrol it on a regular basis.
