Veterans Memorial Parkway
This route runs along the Providence Rivers and offers impressive vistas of the downtown Providence skyline. Lines with maples, oks, black pine, and sycamore trees, it passes the landmarks of Squantum Woods, Watchemoket Cove, and Fort Hill Overlook. Although within an urban area, Veterans Memorial Parkway has adjacent heavily wooded areas of both public and private land that masks the urban landscape. Construction was between 1910 and 1920 and is a fine example of the Parkway movement in the early 20th century. Designed by the prominent Olmstead firm and associated with the Greater Metropolitan Park Plan, it has been recommended as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
