This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! NY 431 runs 7.96 miles from Wilmington, climbing Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks. The highway rises in elevation from over 2,000 feet to over 4,500 feet, gaining about 450 feet per mile. At the summit, a stone castle built from native rock holds a restaurant and gift shop, and an elevator carved into the mountain itself carries visitors the final 276 feet to the 4,867-foot peak.
