Diamondback (NC 226A)

This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! NC 226A begins near Woodlawn, and the first sign on the road is a notice to truckers: steep winding road ahead, trucks not recommended. The road climbs Grassy Mountain, rising over 1,900 feet from its start to Little Switzerland. In 12 miles it delivers more than 190 curves, climbing close to 2,000 feet to the Blue Ridge Parkway, with some switchbacks looping close to 360 degrees. The temperature can drop as much as 12 degrees from base to summit. It ends at Little Switzerland, a mountain village with lodging and food on the Parkway.
