US-36 runs through five counties in northeast Kansas, showing off open land, small towns, and wide sky. The road ends at the Hollenberg Station, built in 1858, the most intact surviving Pony Express station in the United States. Inside, the Kansas Historical Society keeps period furnishings and interpretive exhibits about the Pony Express and the Oregon-California Trail travelers who stopped here.
