Waikiki-Kauhale O Ho'okipa Scenic Byway

Map of Waikiki-Kauhale O Ho'okipa Scenic Byway - scenic route

This area was once part swamp with fresh water and named Waikiki, which means “spouting waters.” Today, the dredging of the Ala Wei Canal has drained the wetlands and demarcates the community. The byway’s name itself translates into “Waikiki- Home of Hospitality” which has been true for centuries. Waikiki was once the capitol of Hawaii (from the years 1400-1808) before the capitol was moved to Honolulu. Although losing its title, it was still a favorite retreat for royal rulers and their families for years and years to come. People have enjoyed the beaches and surfing here for centuries and today bronze surfboards line the byway telling the about the history and culture of the area. This byway winds back and forth on the streets of the community, allowing for many driving variations of the route and by many sought-after beaches.
