Pikes Peak Highway

Map of Pikes Peak Highway - scenic route

This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! The Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile toll road running from Cascade, Colorado to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet. Construction was financed in 1915 by Spencer Penrose at a cost of $500,000. The road climbs through four distinct life zones, from Ponderosa pine forest at 7,400 feet to bare rock at the summit, with the temperature roughly 30 degrees cooler at the top than at the base. It has hosted the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, an annual car and motorcycle race, since 1916. No gas stations on the road.
