Seminoe to Alcova Scenic Backway
The Seminoe-Alcova Scenic Backway is a 64-mile stretch of road that winds through some of Wyoming's most rugged and beautiful country. HISTORY The Seminoe-Alcova Scenic Backway follows an old miner's route used by prospectors on their way back from California in the 1860s. In 1868, gold was discovered in the Seminoe Mountains, which led to a brief gold rush. A boomtown quickly sprang up, but it was soon abandoned when the gold ran out. In the late 1930s, the US Bureau of Reclamation began construction of Seminoe Dam on the North Platte River. The dam was completed in 1939, creating Seminoe Reservoir. The reservoir and the surrounding area became a popular destination for recreation, and the road that passed through it was improved to make it more accessible to visitors. THINGS TO SEE AND DO: There is no shortage of things to see and do along the Seminoe-Alcova Scenic Backway. HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS: SEMINOE STATE PARK: This park is home to Seminoe Reservoir, a popular destination for fishing, boating, and swimming. The park also offers hiking trails, camping sites, and a visitor center. MIRACLE MILE: This stretch of the North Platte River is a blue-ribbon trout fishing paradise. Anglers come from all over the country to try to catch a record brown or rainbow trout. Dispersed camping is available in the Miracle Mile area with several different sites. SEMINOE SAND DUNES: These impressive dunes are part of the Ferris Dune Field. Visitors can hike, sandboard, or simply enjoy the views. COTTONWOOD CREEK DINOSAUR TRAIL: This trail follows a creek where dinosaur bones were discovered in 1991. Visitors can learn about the dinosaurs that once roamed Wyoming and see some of the fossils that have been found. ALCOVA RESERVOIR: This reservoir is another popular destination for fishing, boating, and swimming. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles and pelicans. In addition to these specific attractions, the Seminoe-Alcova Scenic Backway itself is a beautiful drive. The road winds through a variety of landscapes, from the high deserts of the Red Desert to the lush river valleys of the North Platte River.
