This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! Sonora Pass has tight technical turns, steep switchbacks, maximum grades approaching 26 percent, and light traffic. The pass reaches 9,624 feet and is closed in winter. On the eastern descent, the last set of switchbacks drops at a 25 percent grade into Leavitt Meadows, a broad mountain valley ringed by snow-capped peaks. The pass can remain closed into late spring. Check Caltrans before going.
