This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! South Grade Road climbs through 21 switchbacks to the 5,200-foot summit, a 2,500-foot gain in less than seven miles. Oak trees give way to pines as the road twists upward. On a clear day at the top you can see west to the Pacific Ocean and south into Mexico.
