Mulholland Highway ("The Snake")
This is not an official byway but it is fantastic! Mulholland Highway runs east to west along the spine of the Santa Monica Mountains between Calabasas and Malibu, about 30 miles through the mountains without tunnels. The Snake is a 2.4-mile stretch between Kanan Road and Sierra Creek Road, known for a series of tight hairpin turns that follow the steep ridges of the mountains. It reopened in December 2025 after a six-year closure caused by the 2018 Woolsey Fire and mudslides, with new curve-warning signs, rumble strips, and tightened intersections added.
