Ashley River Road
The Ashley River Road, South Carolina Highway 61, runs parallel to the Ashley River. The road’s construction was first authorized in 1691 and was meant to span from Charleston to the Ashley Barony; however the project was not completed until 1721. This road is likely the oldest road still in use in South Carolina and is highly significant to the history and development of the city of Charleston, the Ashley River Region, and the state as a whole.
