Lamoille Canyon Route 227
This byway travels to Lamoille Canyon, carved into the Ruby Mountains by glaciers and known for its U-shaped, canyons, valleys, peaks, and year-round snowfields. Enjoy panoramic views, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. Pack a picnic and stop at the Powerhouse Picnic Area in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Then head to Glacier Overlook for the interpretive panels that tell the story of the glaciers and formation of the area’s topography. Bring your hiking gear? Try out the many trails, including the more difficult Thomas Canyon Trail that will amaze you with its wildflowers, bighorn sheep, deer, and forest. To find this byway, take Interstate 80’s exit 301, onto business I80 then right onto 5th Street which will become SR227. In 17 miles. Turn right onto Canyon Road/Forest Road 660 where the byway begins. More from National Scenic Byway Foundation →
