Named for the Green Swamp Preserve from which it passes through, the Green Swamp Byway snakes in and out of swamps and pocosins (highly acidic freshwater evergreen shrub bog) and into the sweeping longleaf pine savannahs. Once dominated by timber and paper mills, most of the land along the route is now protected conservation lands managed by a national non-profit group.
