John Marshall Highway
John Marshall, from Virginia, is the longest serving U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The John Marshall Highway was named for him and is also known as Highway 55. Much of the route is designated as a byway, but there may be very short breaks. History buffs will want to start this route just to the north at the Manassas National Battlefield Park and enjoy 2 visitor centers, guided tours, and hiking trails. Check the park’s website for any trail or bridge closures. Continue this byway to Great Meadow, a 250-acre site with an event center and steeplechase course. It is home for the Virginia Gold Cup (May) and the International Gold Cup (mid-October) as well as 6 sanctioned horse races, terrier races, tailgate contest, and a Porsche sports car exhibit.
