More than 300 works of art from the museum’s permanent collection are on view within this exhibition, reflecting the visionary ideas and styles developed by men and women from more than half of Africa’s 55 nations. The installation is organized around seven viewpoints: collectors, scholars, artists, sponsors, performers, museums, and the visitor.

Hillyer’s featured solo artist, Mona Bozorgi, will lead a gallery talk about her exhibition Threading the Gaze. Drawing on images, primarily selfies, taken by Iranian women during the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement, Bozorgi traces circuits of exchange between human and non-human gazes.
