Craig Baldwin's WILD GUNMAN (1978) is a meditation on the Marlboro Man, using a combination of social satire and recovered film images to deconstruct the myth of the cowboy and the West. Charles I. Levine's HORSEOPERA (A WESTERN) (1970) uses individual shots as loops to create a rhythmic structure that transforms stereotyped Western characters and actions into a plastic mosaic.
LONESOME COWBOY, a self portrait, clocked in at 29 seconds. My late friend and fellow filmmaker, Dean Snider and I had a contest to see who could make the shortest film with a sound track.
CREMASTER 2 is a gothic Western premised loosely on the real-life story of Gary Gilmore, alternating between the Columbia Icefield in Canada and the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. ARABESQUE explodes into dance, the dance of the bucking horse, the bull, the clown, the rodeo rider.
As dance artists continue to experiment with how choreography is made, seen, and shared, this new festival offers a space to explore what becomes possible when dance moves beyond the stage.
