This exhibition shifts the focus from function to other, lesser-known stories layered within each object, drawing on the dual meaning of “belongings” as both possessions and senses of affinity, kinship, or identity. Organized in four sections, the exhibition highlights key moments of transition for these objects from their early owners in Africa to their eventual arrival at the Fowler Museum.
Comprising 251 objects representing 16th through 19th century Europe, Great Britain and the United States, this exhibition interprets silver in its social contexts. Gleaming vessels from renowned workshops highlight important styles and techniques.
