Michael Columbia is a multi-instrumentalist trio of veteran genre benders, David McDonnell, Christopher Kalis, and Dylan Ryan, who drift effortlessly between Soft Machine-style soprano saxophone leads, the interlocking riffs of Discipline-era King Crimson, and the psychedelic-hypno-funk rhythms of Can. Null Mutants is the Chicago-based duo of Todd Irwin and Nick Butcher, mixing deep reverence and acute experimentation with nods to reggae, dub, and musique concrète.
